Short answer: For a plot rebuild in DLF, Sushant Lok or South City, plan for 12–18 months away from home. Move daily essentials to a rental flat, put bulky furniture, heirlooms and extras into month-to-month storage, treat old wooden furniture for termites before storing it, and book packing one to two weeks before demolition starts.

Across DLF Phases 1 to 4, Sushant Lok and South City, old houses are being rebuilt as modern floors. If yours is next, the construction plan probably has a lot of detail. The household plan usually does not. This guide fills that gap.

Step 1: Accept the real timeline

Contractors quote a schedule. Rebuilds tend to run past it because of approvals, material delays, the monsoon and finishing work. Most families should plan for 12 to 18 months and choose storage that bills month to month, so a delay costs one more month, not a penalty.

Step 2: Split the household three ways

Walk through the house with three labels:

LabelWhat goes hereWhere it goes
Live withClothes, kitchen basics, beds you will use, work-from-home set-up, medicines, documentsThe rental flat
StoreExtra furniture, dining and drawing-room sets, almirahs, crockery, books, décor, seasonal items, heirloomsStorage
Let goThings you would not put in a brand-new homeSell, donate or discard

The “let go” pile matters more than people expect. A new house rarely suits every piece from the old one, and everything you store costs money every month.

Step 3: Prepare old furniture properly

Old houses often hold heavy solid-wood furniture that has never moved. Before it goes into storage:

  • Check for termites. If there are any signs (powdery dust, hollow sounds, tunnels), get the furniture treated first.
  • Dismantle beds, almirahs and large tables where possible. Bag and label the hardware.
  • Empty every drawer and trunk; old trunks often hide things you want to keep with you.
  • Separate glass and marble tops and pack them on their own.

Step 4: Plan pickup around the demolition date

Book packing and pickup one to two weeks before the contractor’s start date. Old DLF and Sushant Lok houses often have narrow staircases and tight parking, so a large lot may take more than one day or need a smaller vehicle for the first trips.

If some furniture is going to the rental flat and the rest to storage, tell your storage company in advance. The two lots can be labelled differently and handled on the same day.

Step 5: Keep track while you wait

  • Keep the item list from pickup in a safe place.
  • Authorise one or two family members to request items, in case you need something during the year.
  • Make sure the monthly payment cannot lapse while you are busy with the build.

Step 6: Plan the move back in stages

New floors are often handed over before every fitting is finished. Bring back bedroom furniture and essentials first, then the rest once the painting and polishing are done. That avoids furniture sitting in dust for weeks.

What it costs

Storage for a large house is quoted on volume. As a reference point, CratoSpace’s Space plan for furniture starts at ₹2,499 a month, and full houses get a custom monthly price. Compare that with renting a flat big enough to hold everything for 18 months: the difference usually pays for the storage several times over.

See storage in DLF Phases 1–4 or storage in Sushant Lok and South City for local details, or send us photos on WhatsApp for a price.

More questions about house rebuilds

How long does it take to rebuild a house in Gurgaon?

Demolishing an old house and building new floors commonly takes 12 to 18 months, and delays are common. Plan storage on a month-to-month basis rather than a fixed end date.

Should I store everything or take it to the rental flat?

Take daily essentials and what fits comfortably in the rental. Store bulky furniture, heirlooms, extra crockery, books and seasonal items. It saves renting a bigger flat for a year or more.

Will old wooden furniture survive more than a year in storage?

Yes, if it is clean, dry, treated for termites if needed, wrapped in breathable material and stored without heavy loads on it.
