Short answer: Decide what to store, estimate the volume from your furniture rather than your flat size, plan for a realistic duration with a month-to-month plan, get the full monthly price in writing, and sort out your society’s move-out permission a few days before pickup.

Short-term storage usually starts with a date you cannot move: a lease that ends, a renovation that starts or a flight that leaves. Here is how to plan it so the weeks in storage are uneventful.

1. Decide what actually needs to go

Walk through the home with three labels in mind: store, keep with me, and let go.

  • Store: furniture and appliances you will use again, seasonal items, books, décor, kitchen extras.
  • Keep with me: clothes for the period, laptop and chargers, medicines, documents, a small kitchen kit.
  • Let go: things you have not used in a year and would not buy again. Every carton you do not store is money saved each month.

Jewellery, cash, passports and original property papers belong in a bank locker, not in storage.

2. Estimate the volume, not the flat size

People often describe their storage need as “a 2 BHK”, but two 2 BHKs can differ by half. A fully furnished flat with a sectional sofa, two king beds and a six-seater dining table takes far more space than a sparsely furnished one.

The quickest way to get an accurate number is to send photos of each room on WhatsApp. If you prefer to work it out yourself, our price calculator adds up typical item sizes.

3. Work out the duration honestly

Renovations run late. Possession dates move. Plan for the realistic duration, not the optimistic one, and choose a provider that bills monthly with no lock-in, so a delay simply means another month.

SituationTypical storage period
Painting or polishing1–3 weeks
Modular kitchen or flooring3–6 weeks
Full flat renovation2–4 months
Possession gap on a new flat1–6 months
Plot rebuild into new floors12–18 months

4. Know what it will cost

At CratoSpace, small lots of cartons and suitcases start at ₹999 a month, and furniture and appliances start at ₹2,499 a month. Full homes get a custom price based on volume. Ask for the monthly price, and what pickup and delivery cost, before anything leaves your home.

If you were thinking of renting a godown instead, add up the deposit, brokerage, 11-month agreement, electricity, lock and transport first. Our godown vs storage comparison walks through it.

5. Sort out the society paperwork early

Most Gurgaon societies need a move-out or material-out permission and a service-lift slot before furniture can leave. Some only allow moves on weekdays during the day. Apply a few days ahead and share the form with your storage provider so they can give you the crew and vehicle details it asks for.

6. Prepare items the day before

  • Empty all drawers and cupboards.
  • Defrost the fridge 24 hours ahead and leave the door open to dry.
  • Drain the washing machine.
  • Have ACs uninstalled by a technician.
  • Make sure everything is dry. Moisture is the main cause of damage in storage.
  • Photograph expensive pieces before they are wrapped.

7. On pickup day

Be there, or have someone you trust there, to point out what goes and what stays. Check the item list before the truck leaves and keep a copy. It is the simplest way to know what is in storage and to ask for specific pieces later.

8. Getting things back

With doorstep storage you do not visit a unit. You ask for what you need and it is delivered. Plan the return the way you planned the pickup: confirm the new society’s move-in rules, book the lift, and bring back essentials first if interiors are still being finished.

More questions about short-term storage

How far in advance should I book short-term storage?

About a week before your move-out date is comfortable. For a full-house move or a society that needs permissions, give yourself one to two weeks.

What is the shortest period I can store for?

Most providers bill monthly. If you only need a couple of weeks, ask whether they have a short-stay option, or plan for one month.
