Short answer: As a rough guide, a 1RK needs about 30–60 sq ft of storage, a 1 BHK about 60–120 sq ft, a 2 BHK about 120–200 sq ft, a 3 BHK about 200–300 sq ft, and a 4 BHK or villa 300 sq ft or more. Your furniture matters more than your flat size, so the most accurate estimate comes from photos or an item list.
“How much space do I need?” sounds like a simple question, but two homes of the same size can need very different amounts of storage. This guide gives you rough numbers and explains how to refine them.
Rough storage space by home size
These figures assume goods are packed sensibly and stacked to around 8 feet, with furniture wrapped and nothing crushed.
| Home | Rough storage floor space | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 RK / studio | 30 – 60 sq ft | Bed, a wardrobe or two, small appliances, 10–20 cartons |
| 1 BHK | 60 – 120 sq ft | Bed, sofa, wardrobe, fridge, washing machine, 20–30 cartons |
| 2 BHK | 120 – 200 sq ft | Two beds, sofa set, dining set, two wardrobes, appliances, 30–50 cartons |
| 3 BHK | 200 – 300 sq ft | Three beds, larger sofa set, dining set, several wardrobes, 50+ cartons |
| 4 BHK / villa / kothi | 300 sq ft and up | Everything above plus heavy wooden furniture, crockery, books, décor |
Treat these as planning ranges, not quotes. A minimalist 2 BHK can fit in less than a heavily furnished 1 BHK.
Why furniture matters more than flat size
Big items drive the space you need:
- An L-shaped sofa can take as much room as three regular sofas.
- King beds with storage boxes take more space than standard frames, even after dismantling.
- Solid wooden almirahs and dining sets cannot be stacked under other things.
- Cartons stack neatly. Fifty well-packed cartons often take less space than a single large sofa.
So when you estimate, list the big pieces first and count the cartons last.
Is a 10x10 storage unit enough?
A 10x10 unit gives you 100 sq ft of floor space. In practice that usually holds:
- a furnished 1 BHK comfortably, or
- a lightly furnished 2 BHK if it is packed tightly and stacked high.
A fully furnished 2 BHK with a big sofa set, two double beds, a dining set and appliances often needs more than 100 sq ft.
A quick way to estimate your own volume
- Walk through each room and list every item bigger than a suitcase.
- Mark which items can be dismantled: beds, some wardrobes, tables.
- Estimate cartons. A loosely filled shelf of books or clothes is usually one or two cartons.
- Decide what you will sell or give away. Every item you do not store saves money every month.
- Use our price calculator to turn the list into a monthly estimate.
Self-storage vs doorstep storage: who does the measuring?
If you rent a self-storage unit, you choose the size, so getting it wrong means either paying for empty space or running out of room.
With doorstep (managed) storage, like CratoSpace, you do not pick a unit. We estimate the volume from photos or a list, confirm a monthly price, and you pay for what you store. If you add or remove items later, the plan changes with it.
Getting an exact number
The fastest route is to send a few photos of each room on WhatsApp. We will tell you which plan fits and what it costs per month, before anything is picked up. For full homes we may suggest a short video call to count the big pieces.
More questions about storage space
Is a 10x10 storage unit enough for a 2 BHK?
A 10x10 unit (100 sq ft) usually fits a furnished 1 BHK or a lightly furnished 2 BHK if it is packed well and stacked high. A fully furnished 2 BHK with large sofas, two double beds and a dining set often needs more.
How much space does a 1 BHK need in storage?
As a rough guide, 60 to 120 sq ft of floor space with goods stacked to about 8 feet. The range is wide because furniture varies so much.
Do I need to know the square footage for doorstep storage?
No. With managed doorstep storage, the provider estimates the volume from photos or a list and prices it for you. You only need square footage when you rent a self-storage unit yourself.
